Ubuntu Processor Scaling Fix

Post by Pam Heinze » 10-10-2005 10:24 AM

For anyone who is using Ubuntu with a CPU that supports frequency scaling (bad thing for SETI), here is the code that will disable it:

Code: Select all

$ sudo mkdir /root/init.d-mvd
$ sudo mv /etc/init.d/powernowd /root/init.d-mvd/
Reboot, get message that CPU scaling not supported and BOINC away as usual. The frequency monitor in the Gnome panel now shows 1.87 GHz, just like old times. Way better than 800 GHz.

User Maqui said he makes a directory for keeping things he does not wish to run at startup. In this case, it is the powernowd which does the scaling. He said should powernowd ever need updating, it would have to be moved back, or the update wouldn't work.

Thanks to the lovely people at the Ubuntu forums for this help.

There is an application called BUM which controls what starts or not at start up... you should use that instead of hacking text files :)

I think it is in Administration>Services

you can just do a

sudo bum

as well...

It told me bum not found.

Using 5.04 right now and there's a thing called Synaptics Package Manager. I could have removed powernowd with that, from the looks of it. And I can add ltsp with it. Guess I'll try to use Ubuntu, when I build my server.

Synaptics is very nice... but BUM can just disable stuff from starting if you like...

It is found in Administration>Services
