The Panther

Post by Shirleypal » 05-16-2006 08:34 PM

by Rainer Maria Rilke

THE POEM
1. From seeing the bars, his seeing is so exhausted
2. that it no longer holds anything anymore.
3. To him the world is bars, a hundred thousand
4. bars, and behind the bars, nothing.

5. The lithe swinging of that rhythmical easy stride
6. which circles down to the tiniest hub
7. is like a dance of energy around a point
8. in which a great will stands stunned and numb.

9. Only at times the curtains of the pupil rise
10. without a sound . . . then a shape enters,
11. slips though the tightened silence of the shoulders,
12. reaches the heart, and dies.

Kant's Kat

Post by cybrwurm » 09-10-2011 09:29 PM

.
So how does poetry relate to philosophy?
.
Rather well, I think ...
.
RM Rilke previously wrote 'The Panther':
From seeing the bars, his seeing is so exhausted
that it no longer holds anything anymore.
.
The panther is the human will; and since 'perception is intentional' proper
seeing requires an active will. Without an active will it is difficult to see.
.
To him the world is bars, a hundred thousand bars,
.
The bars are all the phenomena that life presents us. The world makes
its impressions upon our senses, but it is our mind that sorts them out
according to the eternal categories (time, space, causality) and thus makes
sense (ie. straight and rigid lines; "bars") out of the chaos that we sense.
.
and behind the bars, nothing. <snip remainder>
.
Beyond the phenomena that our minds create there is only a mysterious
something that we cannot know; what Kant calls 'the thing in itself'. But
since the world as it is for itself cannot be known, we cannot even say
'that' it exists, let alone 'what' it is that exists. Logically then the world-
in/for-itself is merely a fanciful concept within our minds that corresponds
to nothing 'out there'. Reality, then, is quite literally "nothing".
.
Whew! That was hard work, folks. But now the conclusion:
And so it seems that Rilke's panther is actually Kant's Kat!

thx dude111, I'm very glad to be here.
.
btw, how do you get a graphic under your name?
and how do you change the text under your name?
I'd like to change both of mine, but there's no sections for this in the profile area, and no info on how to do it. Is this a thing that only moderators can do?

Welcome cybrwurm. :)

I see you now have an avatar so you must have gotten some information or figured it out. You can also look here for more info:

misc.php?action=faq&page=1#avatar

If you want help getting a custom avatar up to your profile I'd be glad to help any way I can. Your nick, being another term for computer bug/virus, has much graphical representation online so you should be able to find something you like on Google Images .

Example HERE and below:

thx dale, I love your graphic and will use it on my website eventually, but it seems a bit big to function as an avatar. Anyway, I already have a custom avatar ready to go, I just need to know how to upload it ... ???

Those examples would need to be resized. Most photo sites like Photobucket.com have means to resize, as does Picasa and Irfanview image softwares.

You will have to have 30 posts before you can upload your own custom avatar, which will need to be 150 pixels (I think) square or smaller, then follow the instructions in your profile setting page for uploading.

Free image editor for resizing, etc:

http://www.irfanview.com/

http://www.paint.net/

picasa.google.com/

Sites that resize:

Photobucket.com
