Fatal Stabbings, Random Murders & Police Killings On The Rise In Canadian Cites
Within hours on the weekend, Canada was witness to two separate unprovoked fatal stabbings that occurred in the cores of two of the country’s largest cities.
One in Toronto saw a 16-year-old boy, Gabriel Magalhaes, stabbed to death while waiting on a bench in a TTC subway station. The other in Vancouver saw a 37-year-old man, Paul Schmidt, fatally attacked in front of his wife and young daughter.
A gruesome video captured on a bystander's cell phone showed the bloody aftermath of the latter attack. A dazed Schmidt can be seen clutching his stomach outside a downtown Starbucks before collapsing motionless to the sidewalk amid puddles of his own blood.
Amidst the killings was a wave of other public stabbings and attacks that largely went unnoticed because the victims were able to survive their injuries.
The wave of random attacks is also occurring as another Canadian crime trend — the killing of police officers — reaches an unprecedented rate.
